What reviewers say

History

A year after the finderless L, the same body with a finder: March 2000, ¥68,000, a 0.7× combined finder and coupled rangefinder with lever-selected frames for 35 and 90 together, 50 and 75, the platform’s mechanical 1–1/2000 shutter, a self-timer, and three meter LEDs in the finder — the first Leica-thread camera ever built with a meter behind the lens. Silver or black, and from 2002 olive or navy at the same price. 395 grams, polycarbonate covers over a metal chassis. It was replaced in 2002 by the R2, the same camera in magnesium with an M bayonet, and discontinued in July 2004.

Chris Cushing: a finder brighter than most classic rangefinders, a crisp patch, and “as a tool the humble Bessa R leaves the Leica M-A and my Canon P for dead.” Christopher Osborne finds it “smooth and easy” despite the plastic, and notes the short effective base — about 25 mm — that makes it a camera for f/2 lenses rather than f/1.2. The last camera made new in the Leica screw mount, and the cheapest good one.

Buying from Yahoo! Auctions outside Japan. It is a domestic marketplace: sellers ship within Japan, and most will not register an overseas buyer. A proxy service bids on your behalf, receives the item and forwards it, for a fee and a wait. Buyee, Jauce and ZenMarket each accept a Yahoo auction number directly.
