Variants & identification
| Variant | Mount | Years | Serial ranges | Production |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summarit-M 35 (11643) | Leica M | 2007–2014 | 4049183–4063533 (Leica Wiki, 2007–08) 4102070–4125785 (Leica Wiki, 2009–12) 4151005–4168648 (Leica Wiki, 2013) 4233953 (Leica Wiki, highest recorded, 2014) | No figure published |
- The Leica Wiki's table is headed "Serial numbers compiled from known lenses". It is a record of observed extremes, not a factory batch list: each row's start carries a leading dash and its end a trailing dash, meaning the true bounds lie at or beyond the numbers printed. Leica has published no per-model batch list for the Summarit-M range of the kind that exists for the older Leitz lenses.
- The table's Total column is end minus start plus one — the width of the observed span, not a production figure. 4063533 − 4049183 + 1 = 14,351, printed as "14,351+". Those numbers are shared with every other Leica lens made at the same time: the 75mm f/2.5 Summarit-M's own 2007–08 span, 4048649–4064940, covers almost exactly the same block, which two different lenses could only do inside one common sequence.
How to tell them apart
- f/2.5: an aperture chosen to place the lens below the Summicron in the range
- Superseded in 2014 by the f/2.4 Summarit-M ASPH
Summarit-M 35 (11643):
- 6-bit coded
- Focuses to 0.8 m — not the 0.7 m of the rest of the modern range
Serial-range notes
- the seven-digit number on the front ring
- The rule. Leica draws Summarit-M numbers from the single sequence it uses for every lens it makes, so a copy is dated against the general Leitz/Leica lens year list rather than against anything particular to this model: 4034901–4057000 is 2007, 4057001–4080000 is 2008, 4080001–4100000 is 2009, 4100001–4115000 is 2010, 4115001–4130000 is 2011, and the published list stops at 4130001 for 2012 (camera-wiki.org, citing Puts's Pocket Pod and Pont's Les Chiffres Clés; Leica Rumors prints the same bands as far as 2009). Above 4130000 no general year list has been published, and the only dates on offer are the Leica Wiki's per-model table, compiled from lenses people have reported rather than from factory records.
- the first two digits
- Which generation. 40, 41 or 42 is an f/2.5 Summarit-M of 2007–2014; 43 is the f/2.4 that replaced it in 2014. Every f/2.5 number the Leica Wiki records across the four focal lengths falls between 4038014 and 4240378, every f/2.4 number between 4302424 and 4306336, and all four f/2.4 data sheets give the inscription as 43XXXXX.
- 4049183–4063533
- The Leica Wiki's observed span for 2007–08, and the one place the two published sources agree: the general year list puts 4049183 in 2007 and 4063533 in 2008.
- 4102070–4125785
- The Leica Wiki calls this 2009–12. The general year list disagrees, placing 4102070 in 2010 and 4125785 in 2011. Both are recorded here; neither has been reconciled.
- 4151005–4168648
- The Leica Wiki's 2013 span. It sits above the end of the general year list, so no independent date check exists for it.
- 4233953
- The highest number recorded for the f/2.5, from 2014. The f/2.4 that replaced it starts, on the numbers reported so far, at 4302424 — also 2014, which places the changeover inside the year.

What reviewers say
- Steve Huff (blog) — "The 35 Summarit will do whatever you ask of it": sharp wide open without clinical coldness, 6.9 oz, Leica build at the bottom of the range. The hood is a $139 extra that unscrews itself when you unmount the lens, and wide open there is a little vignetting and corner softness plus mild barrel distortion.
- Chris Gampat (The Phoblographer), with the M9 (blog) — A week in the field: "the level of detail obtained from the lens was wonderful," colours that edit well, strong wide open. He would not buy the combination at the price, and manual focus through the rangefinder gets hard as the light goes.
History
In 2007 Leica revived a name it had not used since 1960 and gave it a new job. The original Summarit was an f/1.5 fifty, the fastest lens in the 1950s catalogue; the modern Summarit-M range is the cheapest, four lenses at 35, 50, 75 and 90mm, all f/2.5, all smaller and simpler than the Summicrons above them.
This 35 is six elements in four groups, coded, focusing to 0.8 m rather than the 0.7 m the rest of the modern range manages — a small compromise that tells you where the cost was taken out. It ran for seven years before the f/2.4 series replaced it.
Reusing an old name for a lower tier is a decision with a history in this catalog: Elmar, Hektor, Summarit and Summaron all named lenses of very different standing at different times, and only Summicron and Summilux have kept a consistent place in the range.
This history is AI-written, from the sources listed at the foot of the page. Where the record is silent it says so rather than filling the gap — but no human wrote these sentences.
