Variants & identification
| Variant | Mount | Years | Serial ranges | Production |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olympus XA2 | 35mm compact | 1980–1986 | — | No figure has ever been published |
| Olympus XA3 | 35mm compact | 1985 | — | No figure has ever been published |
- No production figure exists for the XA2 or the XA3. What every source says instead is that the XA2 was the best-selling member of the series and had the longest run — Mike Eckman calls it the most popular of the XA series, sold for nearly six years. That is a ranking, not a count, and the ranking itself is unsourced in every place it appears.
- The XA2's Good Design award is muddled at the source. diaxa states that the XA2 took the top award out of 2,791 entries in the 1981 Good Design Mark Competition run by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Association, and was selected as the single item most representative of the ultimate level of precision technology in Japan. Olympus's own museum lecture says instead that the XA became the first camera to win a Good Design Grand Prize, naming neither a model number nor a year. Both cannot be describing different awards without one of them saying so.
- The XA3 is the only model in the series that is unambiguously a running improvement rather than a price point. DX coding arrived in 1983 and cameras had to be redesigned to read it; the XA3 is that redesign, and the ASA 1600 ceiling and restored backlight lever came with it. English Wikipedia gives its production as 1985 alone, which would make it the shortest- lived member of the family and would also mean it overlapped the XA2 by a year at most.
- The colour bodies are the weakest-evidenced claim on this page. Red, white, blue and a pink commemorative XA2 are described in collector accounts, and a red XA3 is widely discussed; none of them appears in a catalogue or price list this project could reach, and no quantities have ever been published for any of them.
- The lens gives up half a stop and gains simplicity. The XA's six-element reverse-retrofocus optic was built to close tolerances in high-index glass; the XA2's is a four-element design with a minimum aperture of f/14 rather than f/22, which is an unusual smallest aperture and a sign of how much of the exposure range the program was expected to cover with shutter speed instead.
How to tell them apart
- The XA shell, unchanged: sliding barrier, thumbwheel advance, base lever, top-plate beeper
- A focus lever with three detents rather than a rangefinder — the change that made the camera cheap
- The shutter is faster than the XA's at the top end and slower at the bottom: 2 s to 1/750 against 10 s to 1/500
- No aperture scale anywhere on the body
Olympus XA2:
- A three-position zone lever below the lens where the XA has a continuous focusing tab, resetting to the middle setting when the barrier is closed
- No aperture control at all — the exposure is programmed, and the right-hand side of the body is plain
- No backlight compensation: the base lever offers battery check and self-timer only
- D.Zuiko 35mm f/3.5 in place of the XA's f/2.8, and a minimum aperture of f/14 where the XA stops down to f/22
- 102 × 65 × 40 mm, 200 g
Olympus XA3:
- DX contacts in the film chamber — the reason the camera exists
- Film speed to ASA 1600, against the XA2's 800
- The XA's +1.5 EV backlight-compensation setting restored to the base lever
- A rounder barrier dome and a slightly larger body than the XA2
- Olympus XA2: Black is the standard finish and the only one sold in quantity. Red, white and blue bodies exist with matching A11 flashes, and a pink commemorative model is reported; these are mostly Japanese-market and the sources describing them are collector accounts rather than catalogues. No production split by colour has ever been published, and no price list this project could reach names them.
- Olympus XA3: Mechanically an XA2: same D.Zuiko 35mm f/3.5, same three-position zone lever, same 2 s to 1/750 leaf shutter, same programmed exposure. What it adds is DX coding, the wider film-speed range that DX made worth having, backlight compensation and easier loading. Sold in black and, less commonly, in red, blue and white. The red one is often described as a limited edition; no source consulted states that it was formally limited.
Serial-range notes
- no published decoder
- As with the XA, serial numbers run in a sequence that no source consulted here maps to a date, a factory or a running change. A camera cannot be placed within the run from its number.
Specifications
- Format
- 24×36mm on 35mm film, hinged back released by lifting the rewind knob
- Finder
- Direct-vision optical finder with a bright frame. No rangefinder patch, no shutter-speed needle and no aperture indication — the finder shows the frame and a flash-ready lamp and nothing else · marks in the frame parallax correction · no rangefinder image
- Shutter
- Electronically controlled between-lens leaf, programmed · 2s – 1/750, automatically selected; no manual setting and no finder read-out of the chosen speed · flash sync X, through the side-mounting contacts for the A11 / A16 / A1L flashes · self-timer
- Film advance
- Thumbwheel on the back, worked by the right thumb
- Back
- Hinged, opening to the right; released by closing the barrier and lifting the rewind knob
- Meter
- Programmed automatic exposure only: the camera chooses both aperture and shutter speed and tells the photographer neither. ASA 25–800 set by hand on the XA2; ASA 25–1600 on the XA3, read from DX coding. Two 1.5 V silver-oxide or alkaline cells (SR44 / LR44). The XA3 adds the +1.5 EV backlight-compensation setting that the XA had and the XA2 did not
- Designed by
- Maitani Yoshihisa (米谷美久) — the XA shell the camera inherits; the XA2 is credited to him in the reviewing literature, though Olympus has published no design account for it comparable to the XA's
- Weight
- 200 g
- Dimensions
- 102 × 65 × 40 and 200 g (XA2). The XA3 is given as 102 × 65 × 40 and 220 g by English Wikipedia and as 104 × 65 × 44.5 and 230 g by diaxa — see the disputed entry mm
- Country
- Japan
- Original price
- No list price has been located. Mike Eckman estimates about US$150 at launch, reasoning from a roughly 25 per cent discount to the XA's approximately US$200. That is an inference, not a published figure, and no numeric price is recorded in this entry because of it.
- Accessories
- A11 electronic flash — guide number 10, one AA cell; the usual companion, and sold in matching colours with the coloured bodies · A16 electronic flash — guide number 16, two cells · A1L flash — the small low-power unit; the same side mounting as the XA
Figures we worked out rather than found: Eckman's zone figures in metres: 4 ft is 1.22 m and 8.9 ft is 2.71 m. The feet-first phrasing suggests he read them off a US-market camera, which is marked in feet only, as the XA was. · The XA2's shutter range is 2 s to 1/750 against the XA's 10 s to 1/500 — about two and a third stops shorter at the long end and half a stop longer at the short end. A programmed camera with no aperture control needs the fast end more than the slow one.
Where sources disagree
- End of production
- 1985 (English Wikipedia's specification table, which gives the XA2 as 1980–1985)
- 1986 (Mike Eckman, who gives 1980 to 1986 and calls it nearly six years)
Better supported: Unresolved
One year apart, and it interacts with the XA3, which Wikipedia dates to 1985 alone. If the XA2 ended in 1985 the two barely overlap; if it ran to 1986 they were sold alongside each other, which would fit a cheaper model continuing under a newer one. Olympus has published no discontinuation date for either.
- Zone-focus distances
- About 1.2 m / 2.7 m / infinity — Mike Eckman gives close 4 ft, middle 8.9 ft, far infinity, as three points
- Close 1 m–1.5 m, middle 1.2 m–infinity, far 2.5 m–infinity — Sean Arntz at 35mmc and Classic Cameras, as three depth-of-field zones
- Close from 1.2 m, middle 1.2–1.8 m, mountain from 6.3 m — diaxa
Better supported: Eckman's, as set distances
These are not three measurements of one thing. Two sources give the distance the lens is set to and one gives the range that will be acceptably sharp at the program's likely aperture, and diaxa mixes the two. The practical consequence is real: a photographer who reads the middle setting as good from 1.2 m to infinity will use it in poor light and get soft pictures, which is exactly the warning diaxa attaches to its mountain symbol.
- Lens designation
- D.Zuiko 35mm f/3.5, 4 elements in 4 groups (English Wikipedia's specification table)
- F-Zuiko 35mm f/3.5 (diaxa)
Better supported: D.Zuiko
Olympus's own naming code counts elements by letter — D is the fourth letter and means four elements, F the sixth and means six. An F-Zuiko f/3.5 would therefore be a six-element lens, which contradicts every other description of the XA2 as the simpler optic. diaxa's own sentence calls it much easier to build than the XA's complex f/2.8, which is an argument against its own label. Two cautions about the 4e/4g figure itself, though. Wikipedia's table does not assert it of the XA2 separately: the cell reading "D.Zuiko f=35mm 4e/4g" is written with a colspan across three columns, so one entry is doing duty for the XA1, the XA2 and the XA3 at once. The row immediately below then splits them: the XA1 is given as f/4–22 and the XA2 as f/3.5–14. The same table therefore asserts one lens designation and one element count for two optics that differ at both ends of the aperture scale, which is a formatting convenience rather than a claim anyone made. And no Olympus document consulted here states an element count for the XA2 at all — the company's VisionAge series covers the XA's six-element reverse-retrofocus design in detail and nothing comparable exists for the cheaper camera. The count is a wiki table's, and a compressed one.
- XA3 dimensions and weight
- 102 × 65 × 40 mm, 220 g (English Wikipedia)
- 104 × 65 × 44.5 mm, 230 g (diaxa)
Better supported: Unresolved
Wikipedia's own prose says the XA3 and XA4 are slightly larger than the XA and XA2, which its table then contradicts by giving the XA3 the XA2's exact dimensions. diaxa's larger figures are consistent with that prose. The 4.5 mm of depth is the sort of difference an owner can feel, so this is worth settling and is not settled.
What reviewers say
- Mike Eckman (blog) — Scores it a perfect 10 and frames the appeal precisely: the simplicity of a 1980s point and shoot in a very small package, with an excellent lens and meter, but with the photographer still choosing the focus zone. His complaints are the shutter release, light enough to trip by accident and waste frames, and a viewfinder that shows neither shutter speed nor aperture.
- Sean Arntz (35mmc) (blog) — Carries one every day and recommends it as a no-brainer: fast to deploy, sharp, quiet enough for street work, small enough to sit in a palm. He is candid about the trade — the camera is almost entirely plastic, has no built-in flash, is a bit dull to use, and will punish anyone who forgets to move the zone lever.
- Shawn Granton (Casual Photophile) (blog) — "Over the past three years this camera has never let me down": the sliding cover needs no cap, and the 2 s slow end with the self-timer on a wall handles low light. Nothing to adjust beyond ISO, and the three-zone focus is coarser than the XA's rangefinder.
- Dmitri (Analog.Cafe), "You May Not Like This" (blog) — The dissenting review: the D-Zuiko is sharp, well corrected and vignette-free, and the camera is not a point-and-shoot at all — you focus and advance by hand. His clamshell needed lubricant to wake the camera, the zone lever felt janky, and after several XAs he still finds them "hard to love and frustrating to use."
History
The XA2 is an XA with the rangefinder taken out, and that sentence is both the whole of the engineering and the reason the camera matters. The shell is the same: the same sliding barrier that uncovers the lens and unlocks the shutter, the same thumbwheel on the back, the same lever underneath, the same beeping speaker on the top plate. What changed is that the continuous focusing tab became three detents, the f/2.8 six-element lens became an f/3.5 four-element one, the aperture lever disappeared entirely, and the price came down far enough that the camera stopped being a specialist object.
Zone focus in three positions is a real decision rather than a cheapening. The lever below the lens has a close setting, a middle setting and a mountain, and it springs back to the middle whenever the barrier is closed — so a camera pulled out of a pocket and fired without a thought is set for the middle distance, which is where most snapshots are. The failure mode is equally predictable: a photographer who leaves it on middle for a landscape in poor light gets a soft landscape, because the program will have opened the lens rather than stopped it down.
What the three settings actually are is, remarkably, not agreed. Mike Eckman gives them as distances — four feet, 8.9 feet and infinity, which is 1.22 m and 2.71 m. Sean Arntz at 35mmc and the Classic Cameras review give them as ranges instead: 1 to 1.5 m, 1.2 m to infinity, and 2.5 m to infinity. diaxa gives a third set that mixes the two conventions. These are not competing measurements of the same fact; two of them describe where the lens is focused and one describes what will look sharp, and nobody says which they are doing. It is the single most practically useful number on the camera and it is unsettled.
The XA3 of 1985 is the second row here rather than its own page because there is nothing under the skin to separate them. Same lens, same shutter, same three-position lever, same programmed exposure with no manual override. What it adds is DX coding — which had arrived in 1983 and obliged every compact to be redesigned for it — a film-speed ceiling of ASA 1600 that DX made worth having, easier loading, and the +1.5 EV backlight-compensation setting that the original XA had and the XA2 had lost. Whether the body grew with it is itself disputed: Wikipedia’s prose says the XA3 is slightly larger and its own table then gives it the XA2’s exact dimensions, while diaxa records a camera 4.5 mm deeper and 10 g heavier.
On production there is nothing to report, and reporting nothing is the point. The XA2 is described everywhere as the best seller of the series and the longest-lived, and not one source gives a figure for it, or for the XA3, or for any of the coloured bodies. Even the end of the run is contested — Wikipedia stops the XA2 in 1985, Eckman in 1986 — and since Wikipedia dates the XA3 to 1985 alone, the two datings imply different stories about whether the cheap camera was still being sold beside its replacement. There is no serial decoder to appeal to. A person can date a Rollei 35 to a month from its number; on an XA2 the number tells nothing at all.
The last loose end is an award. diaxa reports that the XA2 took the top prize out of 2,791 entries in the 1981 Good Design Mark Competition, chosen as the item most representative of Japanese precision technology. Olympus’s own museum lecture says that the XA — no model number, no year — became the first camera to win a Good Design Grand Prize. It is a small thing, but it is the shape of this entire family’s documentation in miniature: a famous camera, described enthusiastically for forty years, with almost nothing behind the description that can be checked.
This history is AI-written, from the sources listed at the foot of the page. Where the record is silent it says so rather than filling the gap — but no human wrote these sentences.

A proxy service bids on your behalf, receives the item and forwards it, for a fee and a wait. Buyee, Jauce and ZenMarket each accept a Yahoo auction number directly. Listed alphabetically for information — none is recommended over another, and none of these is an affiliate link.
